Grace’s Garden & She Shed

There’s no better time to enjoy the outdoors than September, so we’re taking a look at some indoor/outdoor spaces that make us want to throw a garden party. Like this picture-perfect potting shed and cutting garden created by Westport-based Interior Designer Grace Rosenstein of Atelier Roan.

Rosenstein describes her style as “timeless and elegant, layered with natural details.” She’s an avid gardener, and she wanted her shed to be a destination in her yard where she could “spend time alone in nature, pick veggies and flowers with her daughter, and entertain family and friends.” The shed does all that, and it’s stunning to look at.

Like any well-designed out building, the shed functions as an extension of Rosenstein’s house: “It is big enough to store all of my necessary garden tools, pots, shovels, vases, serve ware, chair cushions, and shovels, but it’s mostly just a chic place for creating arrangements and potting.” We love how the muted colors, like Farrow & Ball Mizzle, are the perfect backdrop for bold greens, pinks and purples in the garden.

Rosenstein enlisted the help of Landscape Designer Kelly McGovern to design space and the surrounding veggie and flower gardens. And there’s a dining corner, of course, where Grace and friends can enjoy the fruits of her labor.

One of Rosenstein’s reminders when it comes to designing interiors: never underestimate the power of fresh flowers to brighten a space. Planting a garden intended just for cutting is a great way to ensure you always have something pretty on hand. By separating these gardens from her home’s landscaping, she doesn’t have to worry about the property looking messy, while she plants, snips and pots to her heart’s content. Sounds like bucolic bliss, right in the middle of suburban Connecticut.

If you could design your dream “She Shed” what would it be? Drop your ideas in the comments!
