SNOOP: Annette’s Historic Home

To celebrate Womens History Month we are taking it all the way back to 1776, with a closer look at this historic, tiny home restored by a female entrepreneur in our community. Westporter Annette Norton, owner of Savvy + Grace Westport retail and gift shop, painstakingly renovated, updated and ultimately saved this 930sf two-bedroom home, when she knew she could make more money selling off its antique parts. Annette kept all the character and history intact, right down to the floor boards, and a mantle salvaged from another 1700s home, but added modern conveniences like a washer dryer and an open kitchen. If these walls could talk, they might say, thank you for not letting us get torn down after all these years, and for adding central air.

As Robin Chung writes in this month’s Westport Lifestyle Magazine “almost every inch had to be scraped, repointed, removed, replaced, primed, painted, installed, or stone-stacked. Which Annette did, in the interest of preserving the history of a town she adores. She scoured websites and markets, searching for replacement parts - doors, sconces, hardware...She found an antique door at @mongersmarketusa and a lovely 1700’s mantel from a home in Lebanon, CT.”

We hope you enjoy this special Snoop! Watch to the end to hear her heart-warming tale of how a sparrow flew into her store and her home to tell her she was “going to be okay.” She added an antique sparrow to her stair post as a reminder.
