Walls That Talk: A Colorful and Wallpaperful Remodel

Designers: Stark & Howard // Photo Credit: Julia D'Agostino

With two small kids, homeowners Kate and Russell Pfeffer settled into a charming 1920s beach house in Westport back in 2014. When their third child arrived, they realized a remodel was in order. But, during the construction phase and while they were temporarily relocated, a fire disaster struck the house, leading to a much larger project than initially planned.

The creative couple teamed up with Interior Designers Lauren Stark and Amy Howard of Stark and Howard and truly turned lemons into lemonade with this bright and cheerful remodel for their now family of six. From the ashes, this house rose like a phoenix, transformed by resilience and vision into something even more beautiful than the original. Join us on a tour to witness one of the happiest, most colorful beach homes, showcasing vibrant wallpaper patterns and lots of blue!

Every corner of this compact delights with color and pattern. A few source notes from Stark & Howard:

  • The piano room wallpaper is Schumacher Exotic Butterfly in Marine

  • The Den, with the hidden drop down desk, is painted Farrow & Ball Borrowed Light, a soft light blue in high gloss, and the ceiling wallpaper also has a stroke of blue too!

  • The kitchen has another Schumacher pattern with blue Filigree a nice touch to the overall navy.

  • The primary bedroom features two Anna French papers in blue,

  • The girls' bathroom wallpaper by Christopher Farr, Carnival, is a combination of green and blue, but we think the "Blue Daisy" vanity color makes it feel more of a blue than a green room.

  • The hallway between the piano room and the kitchen has the sweetest blue dot paper by Helene Blanche. Subtle in the photo, but a stunning pattern in person.

You can never have too much wallpaper! The kids got in on the pattern play too choosing wallpaper patterns for their bedrooms. The laundry room is a work in progress but is just as happy as the rest of the home! A few more snaps below from our shoot at the Pfeffer house.
