Over the years, Mar has transformed his quarter-acre property at the end of a quiet side street into an extraordinary four-season retreat. Every inch has been thoughtfully designed to maximize beauty and function, with formal plantings, intimate gathering spaces, and clever transformations.
One of the property’s most dramatic changes appears as soon as visitors arrive. What was once a driveway is now a formal parterre garden designed for dining and entertaining.
Geometric boxwoods give the garden structure, while layered greenery and seasonal plantings soften its symmetry. A dining table sits at the center, turning the former driveway into a welcoming outdoor room.
Mar masterfully uses light and reflection to make the garden feel even more expansive. An outdoor mirror reflects the surrounding greenery and creates an added sense of depth, while dimmable lighting allows the atmosphere to shift throughout the day.
As a TV Host, Mars picked up a thing or two about good lighting. “Every light has a dimmer…because everyone looks good in dim lights. Even my flood lights are on dimmers.”
The former one-car garage has also taken on an entirely new life. Mar converted it into a charming garden studio that now serves as an entertainment hub, complete with its own bar.
And what’s upstairs? Tucked above the studio are cozy sleeping quarters made for overnight guests—or simply an afternoon nap.
